A Teachers Academy is underway and is sponsored by the Utah County Sheriff's Office Honorary Colonels. Three upcoming classes may be of particular interest.
*** PRESS RELEASE June 18, 2019 ***
With the full support of Utah County Sheriff Mike Smith, the Utah County Sheriff's Office Honorary Colonels are sponsoring a Teachers Academy in Utah County. Training has begun with instruction regarding the history of school shootings and discussion of actions to take during an active shooter incident, including techniques teachers can use to help de-escalate any given situation to improve the likelihood of a positive outcome. Over the next two weeks there will be three more classes for the current Teachers Academy.
-Wednesday, June 19, 6:00 PM, VirTra 300 degree active shooter simulation. In this training class members will be faced with a video scenario where they will have to evaluate a given threat, or threats, and decide how to respond. This training will be held at 244 West 300 South, Provo.
-Wednesday, June 26, 6:00 PM, Tactical Medicine. Class members will learn some basic skills to address the issue of providing life saving treatment during an active shooter incident. This can be a critical skill for a teacher to be able to take action in the first few minutes after someone is injured but before more advanced medical care is available. This training will be held in the Emergency Operations Center, Utah County Sheriff's Office, Spanish Fork. (Subject to change.)
-Saturday, June 29, 8:00 AM. Range Day. Class members will participate in shooting drills to help them become more familiar with their weapon and engage in exercises designed to help them make good decisions in critical, high stress situations such as an active shooter incident. This training will be held at the Thistle Gun Range in Spanish Fork Canyon.
Media interested in attending and covering these classes (And maybe getting a real experience with the VirTra 300 simulator!) contact Sergeant Spencer Cannon, Public Information Officer, Utah County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Mike Smith is also available for interviews.
