Burt Garfield

The County Assessor oversees the Assessor's Office, responsible for determining the value of properties for taxation purposes.


Professional Life

Burt Garfield has an extensive background with 29 years of work experience as a corporate leader, small business owner and in public service. Burt has worked at American Express, Discover Card, Zions Bank and Franklin Covey. His roots run deep in Utah County. Burt’s father and father-in-law were both professors at BYU in the Education Department. Burt’s education includes a Bachelor’s degree from BYU in Statistics and a Master’s degree from Purdue in Industrial Administration.

In 2010, Burt turned his work towards the public sector in the Utah County Assessor’s office. His first position was as a Data Analyst. In 2015, Burt was asked by Kris Poulson to be his Chief Deputy Assessor. In April 2023, Burt was elected as the Utah County Assessor in a special election. In December 2023, after just a short time in office, Burt was nominated as the Assessor of the Year by the Utah chapter of the International Association of Assessing Officers.

Burt is working to reorganize the Assessor’s office to match the growth of Utah County. It is his goal to make the Assessor’s office more efficient using technical advancements. Due to the work of the Assessor’s office, other counties in Utah have come to Utah County to learn how to use technology and statistical modeling to improve their processes. Burt has helped coach Assessor’s office employees from Summit, Tooele, Weber, and Iron Counties.

Personal Life

Burt Garfield was raised in Utah County, he went to high school in Provo. He went to BYU, where he met his wife Leilani Harris Garfield. They have four children. Three of his children are currently attending UVU, and one is attending the University of Utah. Burt loves to spend time outdoors. He likes jogging, hiking, and family road trips.
